~ EXAMPLE OF A CIVIL MARRIAGE CEREMONY ~

12 Step Outline

Step 1: Introduction

The celebrant introduces the couple to the guests, it is important to make this as personal and individual for the couple as possible.

Step 2: First Reading

The couple choose a meaningful piece of poetry or prose, and their choice of reader.

Step 3: The Monitum from the Marriage Act

This is the first legally required section of the ceremony, and talks about the Celebrant’s authorization to solemnize marriages by law, and the nature of the relationship into which the couple are about to enter.

Step 4:The Giving Away of the Bride

The Celebrant addresses the chosen person, or people, who are giving away the Bride with words of their choice.

Step 5: The Asking

The Celebrant publicly asks the couple, using their full names, if they are prepared to enter into the marriage with words chosen by the couple, and uses the words, "lawful wedded husband/wife".

Step6: The Vows

This is the second legally required section of the ceremony, and a definite statement must be made, with the couple asking the guests present to witness their Vows, the remainder of the Vows to be made up of words chosen by the couple, if necessary repeated after the Celebrant has spoken them.

Step 7: The Ring Ceremony

The Groom places the ring on the Bride’s finger first while repeating words chosen by him after the Celebrant has spoken them, and then the Bride follows the same procedure, with words of her choice.

Step 8: Other Types of Ceremony

Couples can choose if they wish to have extra ceremonies at this time, such as The Candlelight Ceremony, The Rose Ceremony, The Sand Ceremony, Handfasting, Silken Ribbon, Honeymead Ritual, and Breaking the Glass.

Step 9: The Second Reading (Optional)

Here again a piece of poetry, prose, or blessing is chosen by the couple, and the reader.

Step 10: The Declaration of Marriage and The Kiss

The Celebrant declares the couple “husband and wife”.

Step11: The Signing of the Register and Certificatesby the couple, and witnesses.

Step 12: The Presentation of the newly married couple

The couple are presented to the assembled guests with their signed Marriage Certificate as Mr and Mrs, or with the titles of their choice.
